Helping Us To Help Others

We at the National Rehabilitation Hospital, are delighted to introduce our first ever cookbook. This cookbook is a collection of recipes from past and present patients, staff and volunteers of the NRH.

All proceeds from this project will go directly to the ‘Valentine’s Fund’, assisting patients and their families as they travel their journey through the NRH.

As you can imagine, having a loved one in hospital for a long period of time can put huge financial strain on many patients and their families. The Social Work Department set up the ‘Valentine’s Fund’ some years ago with an initial donation from a past patient. This fund is used to support patients and families with particular needs arising from being in hospital, such as cost for relatives to visit their loved one in the NRH or extra expenses associated with weekends at home. Staff and friends of the NRH have hosted various fundraising initiatives over the years to maintain this fund.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to this cookbook in so many different ways. We are very grateful to those who submitted recipes (and encouraged others to do so too), gave us suggestions for the title and helped with the design and layout. We would especially like to thank Radek who painstakingly went through each recipe to complete the all-important calorie count from the information available to us. We would also like to thank Alison Whelan for the beautiful illustrations she provided for the book.

We also hope that this project provides food for thought in that it gives the reader a tiny glimpse into the life changing journey that our patients and their families navigate. Most importantly, we would like to thank our patients and their families. Those of us who work at the NRH realise the privilege and honour it is to work with each patient who crosses through our doors.
