NRH past patient and Paralympic gold medalist, Mark Rohan, and friends completed in 2021 the challenge of cycling the N2 road in Portugal from Chaves to Faro, a very challenging 730km, over a 6-day period. They took on this challenge to raise funds to purchase specialised cycling equipment for the NRH Physio Department.
“As active cyclists we all know firsthand the health and lifestyle benefits cycling can give everyone. Through my own experience with life changing mobility issues, I believe that making cycling accessible to newly injured patients will greatly improve their health and rehabilitation.” Mark Rohan
We were delighted to welcome Mark to the NRH recently to visit and see firsthand the amazing handcycles and equipment we were able to purchase thanks to their phenomenal fundraising efforts. These bikes will not only help with rehabilitation but will open up the world of cycling to patients of the NRH.
“The hand cycles have been a great addition to the Sports and Exercise Department for its numerous benefits including cardiovascular fitness; for strengthening the upper body and abdominals; and to introduce patients for the first time to the sport. It is our aim to introduce as many patients as possible to different sports in the NRH and having the hand cycles here is a great way for patients to start this sport and then continue it when they leave the NRH. They have been thoroughly enjoyed by the patients thus far and we have already seen the huge benefit of now having these specialist bikes available in the NRH.” Avril NRH Physiotherapist
