5 Day Walk from Athenry to NRH Dún Laoghaire

Fergus Farrell was admitted as a patient to the NRH Spinal Injury Programme after an accident in his back garden, resulting in him rupturing two of his vertebrae. During his time in the NRH Fergus was able to learn to walk again.
He was so grateful to the staff of the NRH, he wanted to give something back to the hospital, in acknowledgement of all that they did to help him. As a result, Fergus decided to create the Toughest Trek Challenge. In October 2019 Fergus, friends and family, successfully walked for 5 days from Athenry to the NRH, arriving to the Hospital on the anniversary of his accident – essentially completing 5 marathons in 5 days! This was an extremely emotional journey for Fergus and his family.

Thanks to fundraising and sponsorship for this event, over €62,000 has been raised to date. Fergus has decided that this phenomenal amount of money will support the services in both the NRH Physiotherapy Programme and the NRH Spinal Outreach Programme. Thank you to everyone who supported this amazing fundraising initiative and helped raise such an amazing amount of money for the NRH.
