In September 2019, Dún Laoghaire Golf Club ran their Captain’s Charity Day in aid of the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) for adults and children. Funds raised from this amazing event have gone direct to the NRH Recreational Therapy Service to support the building of a new putting green and the purchasing of golf related rehabilitation equipment for the Hospital.
This event consisted of 18-hole shotgun competitions including corporate teams, a junior 9 hole, and a re-entry competition. The fantastic day then finished with a dinner in the club house, followed by an auction and raffle.
Thanks to all the businesses and companies who so generously supported this event in many different ways, and also to all who donated amazing prizes for the charity auction and raffle. Some of the raffle prize donors included Hartley’s Restaurant, the 3Arena, the National Concert Hall, Nuala Wolfe Beauty Salon, Windyridge Garden Centre, Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel, the Marker Hotel, the Royal Marine Hotel, the Buff Day Spa and Brown Cow.

Thanks to Dún Laoghaire Golf Club, it’s members and all who took part and supported this amazing day, we have been able to make a real difference to the lives of patients, both adults and children, here in the NRH. The NRH Foundation are working in partnership with the NRH and HSE on the construction of a new life changing facility which will have a huge impact on the lives and rehabilitation journeys of the patients in the NRH. This new facility will open its doors later this year.
Donors and fundraisers help us to continue to equip the new NRH hospital development. In 2019 we were able to support the new hospital development across all four programmes in the NRH, the Brain Injury Programme, The Spinal Injury Programme, The Paediatric Programme and the POLAR (Limb Absence) Programme.

Golf is hugely beneficial for our patients in their exercise and sports rehabilitation therapy. It adds several challenges for therapy sessions such as body balance, hand-eye co-ordination, picking up objects from the floor, swinging movement, grip capabilities etc. – all of this can be done through an enjoyable, fun rehabilitation session, with both adults and children alike. The artificial putting green will be located beside the new Paediatric Playground at the rear on the new build. Having this facility on site will be hugely beneficial to the NRH patient group.
In total, the Dún Laoghaire Golf Club Captain’s Charity Event raised a phenomenal €51,837 for the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH).
We would like to say a very special thank you to Captain Declan Curran and Captain Niamh McCarthy for choosing the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) as their beneficiary charity for 2019. We would also like to especially thank all the Fundraising Committee members who put in such hard work and dedication in organising such an amazing and very successful event and in doing so raising a phenomenal amount of money.
Thank you so much again to everyone for supporting the NRH and the Dún Laoghaire Golf Club Captain’s Charity Day. Your support has made a real difference to the lives of patients, both adults and children in the NRH, and for this we will be forever grateful.
